My little sister is in her final year of primary school- the other day she got cast as Cinderella in her end of year musical. Now, we live in a small predominately white county, and she is one of only 3 black/mixed kids in her school and this casting caused a lot of confusion and sometimes nastiness from her peers: “But Cinderella can’t be black!” “Cinderella is blonde with white skin, you can’t be her.”
I discussed this with my sister and asked how she felt about it, she told me “I don’t care, I got the part because I’m good and they’re just jealous anyway.”
"Because a Cinderella with an afro is cool."
